Following are some of the important tips that are useful to people visiting ENT Doctors particularly for consultation/treatment of hearing problems. Most of us are aware of various health related problems and the method of diagnosis and treatment. When we have eye sight problem, we do not mind wearing spectacles, but when we have hearing problem, we do have hesitation in wearing a hearing aid fearing a kind of social stigma which is not justified. Therefore, whenever we have some ear problems, particularly hearing loss problem, we rush to a nearby ENT Doctor for a quick consultation.
There are several kinds of equipments and methods to diagnose the health problem of a person available nowadays thanks to the revolutionary changes in the medical field. But unfortunately, until today, no device or method has been found to diagnose the hearing loss and a treatment to cure the same. It is the old device of audiogram and some other manual tests with which the ENT doctors determines your hearing problem.
There are generally two types of hearing losses, one is conductive hearing loss and the other is sensoneural hearing loss. While the former is well treatable the later is not treatable completely as there is no medicine found to treat this nerve related hearing loss.
As told earlier, audiogram is the only main source of diagnosing your hearing loss problem and all doctors starts their treatment based on the report of audiogram hence it is very much necessary that everybody should know the method of doing an audiogram and the steps to be adopted while subjected to an audiogram test. The reason being even a smallest amount of lapse in the audiogram either due to your mistake or the audiologist, it could produce a wrong report and that may lead to a wrong treatment.
Keeping this in mind, you have to, therefore, ensure the following.
A sound proof room to test audiogram. Since a very low volume noise is given to your ear while testing the hearing, you may not be able to hear the same if the outside sound level is more (that includes running of generator, some air conditioners, ceiling fans, motor vehicle plying on the roads etc.).
You have to be very alert in hearing the sound, as sometime you may feel that the sound given to your ear is coming from outside or outside sound coming from your ear.
A latest audiometer. It is found in some of the hospitals/doctors a very old audiometer that has no guarantee for a better result.
A qualified and trained audiologist. It is again found in some places, the attendant type people are given some basic training in operating the audiometer, whose lack of adequate knowledge, could also result in wrong reading.
It is also equally important that you speak the truth to the doctor or audiologist about your hearing problems and be honest in telling yes or no when the hearing test is given to your ear.
You can always take the liberty to ask the audiologist to repeat the same in the event that you are not satisfied with the result. You are paying for that and you have the right to get the quality result.
Finally, it is your health that dictates your wealth hence does not mind to go to a place where all these things are satisfactorily available even if to go to a place where all these things are satisfactorily available even if your family doctor or doctors closely known to you have this facility, but outdated. If at all for any reasons, you are under obligation to get the test done by a particular doctor, it is not wrong to go to other place where the facility is good and reconfirm the same to satisfy you before you start taking the medicine for hearing loss problems.
Prevention is better than cure. As mentioned ear, there is no definite medicine to cure the nerve related hearing loss except taking some vitamins to strengthen the nerves. Therefore, it is better that we prevent this incurable problem by properly and religiously adopting the safety norms to avoid becoming a victim to hearing loss problem.
